Spine. Straightness. Weight. The Three Variables of Consistency.
Super Sorted™
Spine. Straightness. Weight. The Three Variables of Consistency.
By Randy Kitts, Founder of Black Eagle Arrows
When I started Black Eagle Arrows in 2011, I wasn't interested in building just another arrow company. I wanted to build arrows that hunters and competitive archers could trust without hesitation. Over the years I've learned that confidence doesn't come from one impressive specification or one exceptional arrow. It comes from knowing that every arrow in your quiver is capable of making the shot when it matters most.
Spend a few minutes in the arrow aisle of any pro shop and you'll see packages covered in numbers. One company talks about straightness. Another emphasizes weight tolerance. Someone else highlights the spine. Those measurements are all important, and every reputable arrow manufacturer pays attention to them.
The question I kept coming back to was a simple one.
If two arrows have different spines, different weights, or different straightness, why should I expect them to hit the same place?
The more we worked to answer that question, the more obvious the solution became. Measuring one characteristic wasn't enough. If we truly wanted to build the most consistent arrows possible, we had to control every variable that influences arrow flight.
That's where Super Sorted™ began.
It wasn't created as a marketing term.
It became the way we build arrows.
The Difference Between Specifications and Performance
One of the biggest misconceptions in archery is that a single specification tells you everything you need to know about an arrow. For years, most of the conversation has centered around straightness, and there's good reason for that. A straight arrow provides an excellent foundation for accuracy.
But straightness alone doesn't guarantee consistency.
Imagine two arrows that are equally straight. If one shaft has a different spine, it won't flex the same way when the string drives it forward. It may tune differently, recover differently in flight, or impact in a different place with a fixed-blade broadhead. Now imagine those arrows also vary in weight. The differences become even more noticeable as shooting distances increase.
That's why I've never believed one impressive number tells the whole story.
An arrow doesn't know which specification is printed on the package.
It simply reacts to the way it was built.
Why We Measure Spine
The spine is the backbone of every arrow. It determines how the shaft flexes during the shot and how consistently it recovers before stabilizing in flight. Even small differences in spine can influence broadhead flight, tuning, and downrange accuracy.
Many archers have experienced that one arrow in the dozen that just never seems to group with the others. Sometimes it's easy to blame yourself. Sometimes it's the bow. Sometimes it's the broadhead.
Sometimes it's the arrow.
By carefully sorting shafts according to spine, we dramatically reduce one of the biggest variables affecting arrow flight. The result is an arrow that reacts the same way every time it's released.
Why Straightness Still Matters
Straightness has earned its reputation because it does matter. A straighter shaft rotates more efficiently and provides a stable platform for broadheads and field points alike.
But it's only one piece of the puzzle.
An arrow can be perfectly straight and still perform differently if its spine or weight isn't consistent with the others in the dozen. That's why we've never treated straightness as the finish line. It's one of three measurements we believe work together to produce truly consistent arrows.
Why Weight Completes the Picture
Weight influences nearly every aspect of arrow performance. It affects velocity, trajectory, momentum, kinetic energy, and point of impact. Even small differences become more apparent as distances increase.
When every arrow carries nearly identical weight, those variables are minimized. Every shaft behaves more like the one before it, creating the predictable performance hunters and competitive shooters depend on.
Consistency isn't about building one perfect arrow.
It's about building twelve arrows that perform like one.
Why We Call It Super Sorted™
Over the years, people have asked what Super Sorted™ actually means.
The answer is simple.
Every premium Black Eagle shaft is measured, sorted, and matched for spine, straightness, and weight before it ever reaches your quiver.
We don't do that because it looks good on a specification sheet.
We do it because it produces better results where they matter most.
Broadheads tune easier.
Groups become tighter.
Long-range accuracy becomes more predictable.
Most importantly, your confidence grows because every arrow behaves like the one before it.
That's the outcome we're after.
Confidence Is Built Long Before Opening Day
I've always believed confidence starts long before a hunter climbs into a tree or a competitor steps onto the shooting line.
It starts during the hundreds of practice shots nobody sees.
It starts while tuning broadheads in the backyard.
It starts every time you pull another arrow from the quiver and expect it to hit exactly where the last one did.
That's what Super Sorted™ was designed to deliver.
Not one exceptional arrow.
A dozen arrows worthy of your confidence.
One Arrow
Every hunt eventually comes down to one opportunity.
Every tournament eventually comes down to one shot.
When that moment arrives, you don't get to choose your favorite arrow.
You shoot the one that's already nocked.
That's why I've never believed confidence comes from owning one great arrow.
It comes from knowing every arrow in your quiver is worthy of the shot.
That's what Super Sorted™ means to me.
And it's been part of the way we've built Black Eagle Arrows since the very beginning.
